The CTO's Newest Hat Is Green CIO, Tuesday, September 12,2023
Can a company embrace digital innovation and become more sustainable at the same time? In the past, business leaders sometimes accepted the idea that being on the leading edge of technology came at a price to the environment. And those who made 'going green' a top goal resigned themselves to thinking that they would need to forgo using some advanced technology.
A growing chorus of companies, however, are saying that they have no choice but to embrace both innovation and sustainability at the same time. More than that, they are coming to believe that IT might hold the key to reaching their environmental goals.

Are HDDs greener than SSDs? Networkworld, Tuesday, September 12,2023
Here's a wrinkle in corporate environmental efforts. Futurum Research is backing a recently published academic paper that suggests hard disk drives (HDD) could be greener than solid state drives (SSD) when taking into consideration the manufacturing process. The paper in question is called 'The Dirty Secret of SSDs: Embodied Carbon' and was published last year by Swamit Tannu, computer science professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Prashant J. Nair, an assistant computer science professor at the University of British Columbia.
The paper states that the biggest carbon emissions happen at the time of manufacture, with production of SSDs generating much more carbon than disk drives of equal capacity.

In-Depth Guide To Machine Learning In The Enterprise Search Enterprise AI, Friday, September 15,2023
Machine learning algorithms are trained to find relationships and patterns in data. They use historical data as input to make predictions, classify information, cluster data points, reduce dimensionality and even help generate new content, as demonstrated by new ML-fueled applications such as ChatGPT, Dall-E 2 and GitHub Copilot.
Machine learning is widely applicable across many industries. Recommendation engines, for example, are used by e-commerce, social media and news organizations to suggest content based on a customer's past behavior. Machine learning algorithms and machine vision are a critical component of self-driving cars, helping them navigate the roads safely. In healthcare, machine learning is used to diagnose and suggest treatment plans. Other common ML use cases include fraud detection, spam filtering, malware threat detection, predictive maintenance and business process automation.

6 Ways Passwords Can Be Stolen - And How Passwordless Can Stop Them All ForgeRock, Tuesday, September 12,2023
Passwords were never the ideal security solution for the modern, interconnected world. Much of what we do today is online - work, school, citizen services, shopping, and more. And what's the first thing users are hit with every time? The dreaded username and password prompt before the journey can continue.
Furthering the problem is the fact that the average internet user has 240 online accounts that require a password. Are we really expected to have a unique password to remember for each account? Hackers know all too well the answer is no, making passwords a ripe opportunity for hackers but a significant threat to everyone else.

China's 1.5 Exaflops Supercomputer Chases Gordon Bell Prize - Again The Next Platform, Friday, September 15,2023
The ACM warns that the final system sizes and final results of the simulations and models run are not yet completed, but we have a look at one of them because the researchers in China's National Supercomputing Center in Wuxi actually published a paper they will formally released in November ahead of the SC23 conference.
That paper, Towards Exascale Computation for Turbomachinery Flows, was run on the 'Oceanlite' supercomputing system, which we first wrote about way back in February 2021, that won a Gorden Bell prize in November 2021 for a quantum simulation across 41.9 million cores, and that we speculated the configuration of back in March 2022 when Alibaba Group, Tsinghua University, DAMO Academy, Zhejiang Lab, and Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence ran a pretrained machine learning model called BaGuaLu, across more than 37 million cores and 14.5 trillion parameters in the Oceanlite machine.

The 5G And Wi-Fi Symbiosis RCRWirelessNews, Tuesday, September 12,2023
The technologies at the forefront of the field are 5G and emerging Wi-Fi networks such as Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7. Since cellular and Wi-Fi historically serve different use cases-many industry watchers view these technologies as competitors.
While users preferred cellular for on-the-go, long-range communications with guaranteed latency and quality requirements, they saw Wi-Fi as a short-range LAN technology offering better data rates, suitable for households or sizeable premises with an option to tailor the network for a certain user density and application. These roles have typically made sense, but now, as 5G and Wi-Fi 6E/7 have both emerged as feature-rich technologies that promise to deliver a seamless user experience, this narrative is changing. As a matter of fact, 5G and Wi-Fi 6E/7 have developed a healthy interdependency.
